FRIDAY JUNE 27

Theme: 1980's Team Day

The opening day of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field will bring the past to the present by honoring the last Olympic Team decided at Hayward Field which was unable to compete because of the US boycott of the Moscow Games. The Opening Ceremony will feature 1980 Team members. The Eugene 08 Festival will showcase 80's music and highlights from the 1980 Olympic Trials.

We will highlight the beauty of Oregon through aesthetic footage of the state. This footage will air inside Hayward as well as at the Festival, with support from TravelOregon.com and the Convention and Visitors Association of Lane County Oregon.

Eugene is a very environmentally conscious city so we will showcase the efforts by the LOC to make Eugene 08 as climate friendly as possible. The day’s activities will highlight the solar stage, the Safeway Track Town Power Station (people pedaling to generate battery power), and our waste management plans.

On this non-competition day, we will be celebrating the contributions of youth and encouraging their continued involvement in the sport. There will be an All-Comers Meet for youth of all abilities 12 and under. Eugene 08 Festival music and entertainment will be youth oriented.

Theme: Community Day

On the second non-competition day, we will celebrate Community Day. There will be an all-comers meet for individuals of all abilities ages 13 and up starting at 4:00 p.m. To acknowledge those in need in our community, Food for Lane County will position bins at the entrances to the Festival and community members are encouraged to bring donations.

The City of Eugene’s motto is “World's Greatest City of the Arts & Outdoors.” To honor the intersection of the City of the Arts & Outdoors and Track Town USA, we will display sport-inspired art throughout the Eugene 08 Festival. There will also be an art exhibit/challenge in Eugene 08 partner Windermere Real Estate’s tent.
