Everyone Must Be On Campus
It took us a minute to realize why it was so empty everywhere. The Safeway parking lot, the streets, Brails ... oh, wait! Everyone must be on campus. Right? We thought about biking down there, but that would have meant forgoing our delicious containers of leftovers (bi bim bob for him, pork bulgogi for me), and that simply wasn't an option. We'd wolfed down all the side dishes — how I love small pickled/fermented things — but each Brails entrée was definitely enough for two meals. And they serve beer and wine with dinner! As if you needed more reasons to eat there. (Though the mellow evening hours are quite a change from the long lines on weekends — not that lines will ever keep me away from a plate of hash browns and bacon.)
It's quiet in Eugene tonight. At least so far. At least around Willamette Street. I hear the Lakers game is good. How was Obama? Report in, folks!
This is a request for your endorsement of Senator Hillary Clinton. This election is so important and we need strong leadership and one who knows the issues and has plans for the American people. We need someone who is ready to deal with issues and resolve the economy issues, healthcare issues, employment issues and the food and gas prices. We need someone who has specific ideas of how to deal with the mess of the Bush years. We need someone who has the support of retired military and military leaders to quickly get our troops home and reinforce the troops to secure our borders and security from the real enemy. We need a fighter and one who can talk, debate and confront leaders of other countries or within our own government to make a real difference for Americans. We need a strong leader who understands the struggles of the middle class, working mothers, families trying to send their kids to college, those who are about to lose their homes and those who have no healthcare. We need someone who can win against Senator McCain in the General Election. I cannot imagine another 4 years with a Republican in office. I do not think the country could withstand the consequences. We need Senator Hillary Clinton as our next President. Thank-you for your wisdom and thoughtfulness to this process. We are counting on you to make the best decision for ALL Americans and in the best interest of ALL Americans. I hope that you will choose to endorse Senator Clinton. I hope others will follow your courage and leadership when you make that decision.

I wrote her a thank you and just received the most touching letter back. Her daughter, Linda Mayer, wrote a two page description called "Four Generations for Hillary" (Grace is 98, Linda 63, Chris 41 and Leah 12) The campaign should post the entire description that Linda has written but I'm going to include two paragraphs here:
(they were at Hillary’s Portland book signing 5 years ago) “When we close enough … we noticed how cheerful and radiant she was. She had a rhythm as she signed…With four of us, just one book, we clustered together. When Leah handed her the book, Hillary looked at her, smiled, signed the book and then asked how old she was. “Seven,” Leah replied. Hillary said, “I used to wear my hair just like yours when I was your age.” I piped in that we represented four generations, including my 93 year old mother, Grace. Hillary immediately stood up and shook each of our hands, interrupting her routine. …Leah surprised me and said, “I sure hope you run for President someday!” Hillary was somewhat speechless, as were we. She laughed and said she was so busy in the Senate she hadn’t had time to think ahead.
We feel Hillary can and should be the next President of the United States. She has the experience, intelligence, and passion to lead and heal our country. She has been through much and continuously tested, and has clearly proven herself. She is a candidate of substance and integrity. We know she can turn things around and build a better future.”
Thank you Grace, Linda, Chris, and Leah. We hope Oregon sees the wisdom of your support.
