What About Air America on KOPT?

Is Air America really leaving Lane County? We just heard today (Nov. 27) that Air America content might remain on the local airwaves despite the pending sale of KOPT AM 1600 to OPB. Sadie Dressekie of Churchill Media tells us Churchill “has been in discussions with a number of parties that are interested in taking over the format and putting it back on KOPT’s original signal, 1450 AM.” The frequency currently broadcasts Deportes Radio, 24-hour sports in Spanish.

Churchill’s other station is the LaX network, broadcasting Spanish language news, talk and music at 660 AM in the Eugene-Springfield area.

Air America is pretty lame though.

I've been listening to Air America since it's debut & it's multitudinous line-up changes & am pretty tired of its incredible schill-ness/partisanship & general lack of entertainment value. The Stephanie Miller show has been pretty entertaining, mostly because of the funny voices guy, but in general, the only show that even begins to cross into less partisan, more populist territory is Ed Schultz, but he's pretty obviously paid off by the dems as well. I'd like a diverse format talk radio, with whoever is good & not just a paid mouthpiece on it. I don't care about their political intentions particularly.

The purpose behind

The purpose behind progressive talk radio is to espouse the progressive point of view. People in Eugene already have multiple opportunities to hear the right-wing point of view. "Political intentions" is the whole point.
I wasn't always totally enamored at their programming choices either, but will lament the loss of the only liberal/progressive voice on local commercial radio.
It's too bad liberal/progressive advertisers seemed unable to get beyond the ownership of KOPT and support the VOICE of KOPT.

yes but,

The thing is, our society is already liberal & the state sponsored radio is very liberal/progressive. It might not be as part of the party line as more radical leftists want it, but for the most part, everything is liberal. That's why right-wing radio did so well, it was a voice that wasn't being heard publicly. Rush Limbaugh was totally new & unheard of when he came out. Anyhow, when you talk about ownership of KOPT, what's the deal with Churchill Communications? Anyhow, the other problem with Air America is it is an entire network shipping out a day's worth of programming, instead of independent shows competing for commercial time. Randy Rhodes or Stephanie Miller would do very well on commercial radio, outside of a cohesive, monopolized ideologically based format like Air America. Ed Schultz is already doing that. That way, programmers can pick & choose who they want to have on their station, instead of picking up a whole Air America package, which is about 10% listenable. I'd absolutely listen to a station that had Ed Schultz, Lars Larson & Alex Jones on, add some other shows on there too, some of the Pacifica shows, This American Life, whatever. It'd do fantastically. (outside of a controlled market!)

You gotta Entertain man! Socialism is not very entertaining

Bottom line:

1. To live in Eugene is to be surrounded by liberal bias, politically correct upper middle class to upper class white douches (hi college professors, yuppies, and soccer moms!), pungent hippies, and wussy Marxists. KOPT and Air America had a great potential market here and totally blew it.

2. The idiots like Al Franken & the other Air America hosts forgot the primary rule: if the show isn't ENTERTAINING, people won't listen. When people don't listen, the shows don't stay on. Don't tell the community to support your crap shows, support them yourself! But you don't, the numbers reflect that. Another reason for you to hate capitalism, because in the long run granola can't compete.

3. Money talks, bullshit walks. Radio, like everything else in this country, is about money. You don't make the money, you don't get the time. Prog radio doesn't make the money, Con radio does. Why?? See #2.

Greed wins again, pussy lefties continue to cry. Effin' hilarious!
